Abstract
Any three-channel system that defines colour identity must assume some type of NX3 transform which models the combined effect of n spectral sensations and observers or three channel measuring instruments may thus disagree on whether a given pair of 'metameric' spectral combinations are a visual match. The potential significance and severity of such deviations are characterized and analysed.
