Abstract
Discusses the processes through which Manchester re-created itself as a successful post-industrial city in the years since the 1980s. The strategic vision developed by firm civic leadership is seen as having played a key role in the regeneration and re-invention of the city. Despite problems of entrenched poverty and low skills, it can claim to have turned around its economic fortunes.
