    Abstract

We have obtained images of Galactic neutral hydrogen (HI) towards the extragalactic source 3C161 with the MERLIN array with a resolution of 200 milliarcseconds. We present continuum images as well as images of neutral hydrogen optical depth towards 3C161. We have detected non-uniform HI absorption in front of the source in several velocity components. Our images probe angular scales of 200 milliarcseconds to 2 arcseconds, which correspond to physical scales of about 200 AU up to 0.1 pc. Previous images of 3C161 taken with the VLA (Greisen and Liszt, 1986) of HI absorption show changes in absorption on angular scales of 10 arseconds to 1 arcminute. VLBA observations show evidence of HI structure on scales as small as 10 milliarcseconds towards 3C161's core, which roughly correspond to scales of 10-100 AU. We will discuss the implications of the data for the structure of the Cold Neutral Interstellar Medium on intermediates scales from 1000 AU up to 0.1 pc.
