Abstract

The Thames Gateway development proposal has attracted considerable policy attention since the mid-1980s. However, relatively little work has focused on the implications for water resources. In the south east of England, competition for water resources is already high, and demand on the increase. It is not yet clear that the future demands likely to be associated with the Thames Gateway can be met in a sustainable fashion: rather, in terms of water supply they seem likely to extend the ecological hinterland of London further afield. The current proposals may well undermine the stated goals in relation to sustainable development.
