Abstract
The surface engineering industrial sector covers an extremely diverse range of process technologies and applications sectors. Surface engineering is vital to the success of all of our manufacturing industries. Virtually every product, from an aero engine to a razor blade, utilises a treated surface in some form or other to achieve functional properties not present in the bulk material, such as corrosion resistance or wear resistance, or to protect against heat and/or oxidation. Surface engineering provides one of the most important means of engineering product differentiation in terms of quality, performance and life-cycle cost. Its importance to the country's industrial and fi nancial well-being is beyond question.
