Abstract
A long short story of 10,000 words (a ‘novelet’ in science fiction publishing) inspired by my commission for the radio documentary Herland and set in an alternative world. Colinas Bravas is a small mid-Atlantic island settled 1000 years ago by mutants from the Americas – women who reproduce parthenogenetically without men. They are however beginning to suffer high rates of inherited conditions. Into their utopia a woman clinician arrives to teach them how to merge DNA from two females to increase genetic variety. Unfortunately the clinician falls in love with one of the women – who experience no need to mate with anyone at all. The story was selected for two different Best SF of the Year anthologies, one edited by Jonathan Strahan, one edited by Gardner Dozois.
