Abstract
The prediction of nonlinear vibration phenomena introduced by high-speed oil film bearings is a major preoccupation of turbocharger designers. The purpose of this paper is to present the computational basis for the efficient solution of such a problem and to use the technique to study the self-excited phenomena in a typical turbocharger running on floating ring bearings. Both fully-floating and semifloating rings are considered and the findings of the simulations indicate that the latter configuration may lead to significant reduction of self-excited vibration. © IMechE 2008.
