Abstract
Intensive statistical analysis on the UK transmission transformer’s historical reliability data has confirmed a constant hazard of 0.27%. However the hazard at older ages cannot be accurately predicted due to the lack of older transformers operating in the system. 77 scrapped transformers’ thermal lifetimes are assessed to assist the statistical approaches by assuming transformer’s lifetime equals to its insulating paper’s thermal lifetime. To improve the statistical significance, the life samples are further enlarged by transformer thermal modelling. The enlarged sample contains 158 transformers and yields a median thermal lifetime of 95 years.
