Abstract
A compact expression for the energy of an assembly of polar polarizable molecules in an external electric field is derived with the help of the inverse dielectric function. The expression leads to an economical derivation of the energy shifts and splittings in the electronic Stark effect in molecular crystals. Previous results are unified by verifying their equivalence and correctness.
