Universal behaviour of the thermoelectric power of composite fermions

    Abstract

    The thermopowers of high-mobility two-dimensional electron gases at even denominator filling factors ν are found to be remarkably similar to each other and also to the thermopower at zero magnetic field. The magnitudes at ν = 1/2 and ν = 3/2 are identical, regardless of temperature and electron density. This also appears to be true at ν = 1/4 and ν = 3/4, with the magnitude of this pair being about two times larger than for the former pair. These results are interpreted in terms of the "zero field" phonon drag thermopower of composite fermions.
