Abstract
Posterior capsule opacification (PCO) is one of the most common complications of modern cataract surgery. Treatment is generally carried out by Nd:YAG capsulotomy. There are various potential complications of this procedure, however, and it should not be performed without evidence of potential improvement to the patient. Visual function tests such as contrast sensitivity and glare provide substantial additional information to standard Snellen visual acuity and allow a more informed clinical decision to treat PCO with laser. Evidence for this and guidance on tests that might be practical for routine use are discussed.
