Abstract
The aim of this review is to present the role of attachment in the development of psychopathology in childhood and classification of attachment disorder in ICD-10 and DSM-IV. There are two general ways by which attachment theory and research may inform us on the relationship between attachment and psychopathology. According to the first, it is believed that some of atypical forms of attachment alone, or probably in concert with other risk factors, may lead to incipient psychopathology or a disorder of clinical importance. The second way, in which attachment may contribute to later disorder, is either by increasing risk or by buffering the effects of other risk factors. Current ICD-10 lists two separate attachment disorders that are generally included in DSM-IV as two subtypes of attachment disorder (inhibited and disinhibited subtypes). Based on both attachment theory and current research, Zeanah, Mammen and Lieberman have provided an alternative classification which distinguishes among conditions of "nonattachment", "disordered attachment" and "disruption of attachment".
