Abstract
The purpose of this chapter is to explore the power of craftivism as an opportunity to express one’s inner views, whether these be of a political, social, or environmental nature. Craftivism can often be overlooked, being seen as a trivial form of craft and/or of activism, however since the COVID-19 pandemic, there has been a resurgence of the DIY movement and a raise in protestation, making craftivism the perfect movement. This chapter provides an overview of the origins of craftivism, before moving into a variety of craftivism examples and outlining how craftivism and ethical consumption interlink. Craftivism could play a vital role in ethical consumerism by celebrating the political, the emotional and the artisanal values of crafting clothes together. Suggestions for practitioners are provided in the conclusion section, thereby outlining how there is a need to make craftivism inclusive and ensure that the power of the movement remains intact.
