Abstract

Lou, a teacher-researcher In NYC who, for over a decade has run a social action-themed Makerspace at a state middle school in New York City, explains how the Social Action Makerspace works and the challenges of transitioning to virtual learning whilst continuing radical and creative approaches to education in lockdown. Students are co-authors, using artistic and creative methods to present their insights into the lived realities of lockdown in New York City during 2020.

The Social Action Makerspace uses a passion-based approach to learning, based on the premise that students learn best when they are given choice as to the themes and tools they use to explore our world.
