Abstract

A family biography of Vollrath von Matlzan, the first West-German Ambassador to Paris. Maltzan was a career diplomat whose career was interrupted in 1938 as he was considered as 'Mischlinge' ('Half-Jewish') by the Nazi anti-Semitic legislation. He survived the war and started a stellar career in the new Federal Republic of Germany. The book researches both branches of his family: the Jewish, maternal branch that went in exile or died in the Holocaust, and the paternal, aristocratic one.
