Abstract
The formation of vortices was investigated by rotating the purely magnetic potential confining a Bose-Einstein condensate. The bias field of an axially symmetric time-averaged orbiting potential (TOP) trap was modified to create an elliptical potential that rotated in the radial plane. An upper and lower limit to the rotation rate for nucleation was observed for a given eccentricity. The thermal cloud was shown to destabilize vortex arrays.
