Abstract
This chapter begins by discussing the different scales of the water resources planning and management problem, and a summarising its challenges, from the physical and human perspectives. Next, we review the major sources of water supply, then how the discipline and practice of water management and planning have evolved to cope with increasingly complex societal demands and environmental conditions.
