Abstract
We are living through a period of immense economic and business disruption in the news media industry. The creation of the internet and all that it has wrought – interconnectivity, immediacy – set in motion the destruction of business models that have supported traditional news media organizations such as newspapers, broadcast television and radio for decades. The talk begins by examining the broad economic and business issues facing the news media industry – including the changing dynamics of consumer behaviour, pricing, market segmentation, economic cycles and the disruption of existing business models. In the second half of the talk I focus more specifically on the challenges and opportunities for specific industry segments, including newspapers, broadcasting, radio and online.
