What causes a war? The case of Thucydides' Sicilian Expedition

Research output: Contribution to journalArticlepeer-review

Abstract

n this article for the Classical Association's magazine aimed at schools and teachers, I explore how Thucydides tackled a question which has vexed historians ever since: what causes a war? His account of the outbreak of the Peloponnesian War in 431 BC is justifiably famous. But his exploration of the causes of the Athenian expedition to Sicily in 415 BC is, in some ways, more complex.
