Abstract

Over the last two centuries, our management of children and young people facing justice has changed dramatically. These changes, rooted in structural and contextual issues, have tended to reflect shifting depictions of young people as either vulnerable, and in need of support, or as bad and deserving of punishment. In this blog (the final one in this bicentennial series), we chart the treatment of young people facing justice, examining the pendulum swing between welfare and punishment that has marked the last 200 years since the founding of The University of Manchester.
