Abstract

Urinary incontinence affects the physical, emotional, and social health of many individuals. Nursing students should be able to identify possible causes for urinary incontinence and should apply actions for its prevention. The purpose of this research was to determine the experience and knowledge of nursing students with the elderly who have urinary incontinence. For this research, a self-designed non-standardized questionnaire was prepared. The online questionnaire were distributed to the target group – nursing students, in May 2018, via web networks. 171 responders completed the questionnaire. Only 37% of students know that among the elderly, urinary incontinence is spread in 30-50%. 75% of students confirmed that assessment tools were not used in clinical settings. Most students (88%) are aware that the nurse plays an important role in identifying the problem of urinary incontinence and nursing interventions. The results show that nursing students are under-informed about the problems of urinary incontinence in the elderly. Among nursing students, there is still the belief that urinary incontinence is a normal part of ageing. An important task of both students and nurses is to be aware of the problems of urinary incontinence in the elderly and to take proper action.
