Abstract

Compacted bentonite is used as a buffer and backfill material in geological disposal of high-level radioactive waste in crystalline rocks. However, groundwater interactions at the interface between a fractured rock and compacted bentonite can cause the erosion of the clay buffer. Understanding the effects of environmental conditions including the elevated temperature and hydro-chemical effects on the erosion process is crucial for the design and performance assessment of the engineering barrier systems. The research presented in this thesis aims to provide new insights into the thermal, hydraulic, and chemical impacts on the erosion of compacted bentonite through a series of lab-scale experimental investigations.
