Electronic properties of ABA- and ABC-stacked graphite in van der Waals heterostructures

Student thesis: Phd

Abstract

In this thesis we look at the electronic transport of graphite in two novel ways. Firstly, graphite in its commonly occurring ABA-stacked (or Bernal/hexagonal) form under the influence of a moire superlattice potential generated by alignment with graphite's insulating counterpart, hexagonal boron nitride. Secondly, we look at the much less studied ABC-stacked (or rhombohedral) graphite, which hosts vastly different electronic properties due to its gapped bulk and flat bands confined to the surface. Lastly we look at flat-bands and their correlated physics again in the system of twisted mono-bilayer graphene.
