Student thesis: Doctor of Clinical Psychology

Abstract

The aim of this thesis was to explore the use of formulation in forensic settings across the lifespan. The thesis is presented as three papers. Paper one is a systematic review and narrative synthesis concerning formulation in forensic settings. Findings suggest that formulation may impact on staff’s wellbeing and confidence and support the development of more positive relationships with service users. Potential barriers to formulation were also identified. The paper is concluded with suggestions for further research and implications for clinical practice. Paper two is an empirical investigation exploring the reach and impact of formulation for young people who pose a risk to others. Interviews were conducted with eleven applied psychologists who work in forensic settings that support young people. Two focus groups with five participants who work in the wider teams supporting young people were also conducted. Thematic analysis was used to analyse the resultant data. Findings suggest that formulation may influence staff’s approach with young people and that team formulations may support staff wellbeing. Potential barriers to the reach and impact of formulation are also discussed as well as implications for practice. Future avenues for research are identified. Finally, Paper Three is a critical paper which includes reflections on the process of completing the thesis. Further information is provided on the how the rationale for each paper was developed; decisions around the methodology and the challenges and learning gleaned from this process. It also includes consideration of strengths, limitations and the research and practical implications of the thesis. It concludes with personal reflections on the thesis.
