Abstract

SiC fibre reinforced SiC matrix (SiCf/SiC) composites are promising structural materials for aerospace and nuclear applications. The performance of SiCf/SiC is primarily determined by microstructure and phase composition, which highly rely on the fabrication process. This study proposes several advanced fabrication approaches developed from Polymer Infiltration and Pyrolysis (PIP) method, aiming at producing SiCf/SiC composites with reduced porosity and increased crystallinity. First, we developed a novel Graded-Concentration Polymer Infiltration and Pyrolysis (GC-PIP) method, which exploits the different viscosity of increasingly concentrated precursor solutions during matrix filling process.
