This study addressed the challenges and limitations in fighting CO2 emissions and global warming through two main strategies: electrochemical energy storage systems and renewable energy production; and underground carbon storage. The research focused on specific aspects within each strategy to overcome these limitations. In the context of electrochemical energy storage systems, the microstructure of Redox Flow batteries (RFBs) was studied. It has been demonstrated that optimising the microstructure through careful design and the use of additive manufacturing technologies can improve the performance of RFBs. Additionally, the impact of heterogeneity on dynamic capillary pressure was investigated, highlighting the significance of considering micro-heterogeneity in the study of Protonexchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs) and natural heterogeneous rocks in carbon storage processes. The study also delved into the upscaling of reactions in underground carbon storage. A workflow was proposed and examined to upscale the reaction rate from the poreto Darcy-scale, aiming to enhance the predictability of continuum models. Furthermore, the research focused on fractured carbonate reservoirs, investigating the complexities involved in estimating upscaled reaction rates in such environments. By addressing these specific aspects and challenges, this study contributes to the broader goal of combating CO2 emissions and global warming. It provides valuable insights into optimising energy storage systems, understanding the impact of heterogeneity on various processes, and improving the accuracy of models for renewable energy production and underground carbon storage.
