Abstract

This thesis studies the operating principles, constructs the electromagnetic model and conducts design optimisations for air-cored resonant induction machines (ACRIMs). In this work, the general equivalent circuit for ACRIMs is constructed, the capacitor tuning criteria are compared, the expressions for key machine operating characteristics are derived. A fast and robust 3-D winding inductance estimation method for ACRIMs is proposed and validated using both 3-D FEA and experiments, the method is applied to the ACRIM design optimisation. A correction-factor based method to enhance the 3-D inductance estimation accuracy is also introduced. An ACRIM prototype is built and the operating principles are validated experimentally.
